Dillard leads Monterey Blue to top in golf qualifier

The qualifying tournament belonged to Ryan Dillard, but the final round belonged to Lubbock High.

Dillard guided the Monterey Blue team to a first-place finish in the boys District 2-5A North Zone tournament, finishing the three-round event as the only golfer to shoot under par.

The Westerners' Black team entered Tuesday's final round trailing the Coronado Red team by six strokes for the final spot in next week's district tournament at the Rawls Course.

Four Westerners scored in the 70s as Lubbock High combined to shoot a tournament-low 293, which helped LHS leapfrog the Mustangs and almost catch second-place Amarillo Gold.

"All their hard work finally paid off," LHS head coach Cortney Smith said. "I couldn't be more proud of these guys. It's good to see them come around. They come out here and play all the time. I hate to repeat myself, but everything they put in, all the work, finally paid off."

The Westerners join Amarillo Gold and qualifying tournament champion Monterey Blue in next week's two-round tournament that begins Monday. Those three teams will join three from the South Zone - Odessa Permian, Midland Lee and Midland were the top three heading into the final round - with the top two teams and top two players not on the top two teams advancing to the regional tournament.

Monterey Blue was in a comfortable position from start to finish. After jumping out to a two-stroke lead after the first round, the Plainsmen dropped into a tie with Amarillo Gold after two rounds. Both teams, though, held a 20-stroke lead heading into the final round.

Dillard, whose 70 in the first round was the low round of the tournament, bested that by a stroke on the Creek Course to finish at 2-under for the three rounds.

"For a sophomore to come out and shoot 2-under, that's something," Monterey head coach Tuey Rankin said. "Today was not an easy day either."

Dillard registered six birdies on Tuesday to finish with a 69. His three-round 212 was the best in the North Zone, beating Lubbock High's Justin Aldous by four strokes.

Aldous was consistent for all three rounds, shooting 73-71-71, but the Westerners were able to pass Coronado with the help of Austin Jung - whose third-round 70 was 13 strokes better than his second round - and Kegan Melvin - whose 74 was an eight-shot improvement from his first-round score on the Meadowbrook Canyon Course.

"I told the guys that now the pressure's off," Smith said. "They need to just go out and have fun and play their game. Scores will take care of themselves. If they play the way they can play, the scores will come and we'll see where we stand."
